Tutorial: How to apply an Image Mask to your OBS

Using an image mask with a webcam source in OBS (Open Broadcaster Software) can add a unique and creative touch to your live streams or recorded videos. In this tutorial, I’ll guide you through the steps to set up an image mask for your webcam source in OBS.

Step 1: Install OBS

If you haven’t already, download and install OBS Studio from the official website (https://obsproject.com/). Make sure it’s up to date.

Step 2: Prepare Your Image Mask

Before you can use an image mask for your webcam source, you’ll need to have a mask image ready. An image mask is typically a black and white image (PNG format works best) where the black areas represent transparency, and the white areas will allow the webcam feed to show through.

You can create or find image masks online. Popular options include circular masks, masks with custom shapes, or even overlays that add themed elements to your stream.

Step 3: Add Your Webcam Source

  1. Open OBS Studio.
  2. In the “Sources” section of the main OBS window, click the “+” icon to add a new source.
  3. Select “Video Capture Device” from the list.
  4. Name your source (e.g., “Webcam”) and click “OK.”
  5. In the properties window that opens, select your webcam from the “Device” dropdown list.
  6. Configure your webcam settings (resolution, frame rate, etc.) as per your preference.
  7. Click “OK” to add the webcam source.

Step 4: Add the Image Mask

Now, we’ll add the image mask as an overlay to the webcam source:

  1. In the “Sources” section, click the “+” icon to add another source.
  2. Select “Image” from the list.
  3. Name your source (e.g., “Mask Overlay”) and click “OK.”
  4. In the properties window that opens, click the “Browse” button under “Image File” and select your image mask.
  5. Adjust the image mask’s position and size to fit your webcam feed by dragging the red outline in the preview window.
  6. You may also want to adjust the image mask’s opacity if it’s too solid. You can do this by moving the “Opacity” slider.
  7. Click “OK” to add the image mask overlay.

Step 5: Arrange and Test

  1. In the “Sources” section, make sure your “Mask Overlay” source is listed above your “Webcam” source. You can click and drag to reorder the sources.
  2. Test your setup by previewing or starting your stream/recording. You should see your webcam feed with the image mask applied.

Step 6: Additional Adjustments

You can further customize your setup by adding other sources, filters, or effects to enhance your stream’s appearance.

  • To add text, images, or other overlays, use the “Text” or “Image” sources.
  • Apply filters like color correction, chroma key, or scaling to your webcam or mask overlay by right-clicking on the source and selecting “Filters.”

Remember to experiment with the settings and preview your stream to achieve the desired look.

Step 7: Start Streaming or Recording

Once you’re satisfied with your setup, click the “Start Streaming” button to go live or the “Start Recording” button to record your content. OBS will now use your webcam source with the image mask overlay as configured.

That’s it! You’ve successfully added an image mask to your webcam source in OBS, giving your live streams or recorded videos a creative and personalized touch.
