Getting Started with OBS Studio in 5 Simple Steps

Embarking on your streaming or recording journey with OBS Studio is a breeze. Follow these five easy steps to set up the optimal configuration, add sources, fine-tune your audio, and run a quick test before going live.

Step 1: Run the Auto-Configuration Wizard

First things first, let’s tailor OBS Studio to your specific needs using the Auto-Configuration Wizard. This tool optimizes settings based on your intended use, considering factors such as fast-paced gameplay streaming or high-fidelity video recording. The wizard takes into account your preferences, computer hardware, and network conditions for streaming.

  1. Open OBS Studio.
  2. The Auto-Configuration Wizard will appear on your first run. To use it again later, navigate to the Tools menu and select Auto-Configuration Wizard.

Step 2: Add Sources to Your Scenes

Once you’ve configured your settings, it’s time to build your scenes by adding sources. Sources can be anything from images and text to video, webcams, game capture, or desktop screens. Follow these steps:

  1. Open OBS Studio, starting with a blank scene.
  2. Locate the Sources Dock at the bottom of the main window.
  3. Click the + symbol to add your desired source.
  4. Basic sources to consider include Display Capture, Game Capture (for Windows), and Video Capture for webcams or capture cards.

For more detailed information on various sources, refer to the Sources Guide.

Step 3: Set Up Your Audio

Ensure that your audio is configured to capture the right devices, including desktop audio and microphone. Follow these steps:

  1. Open OBS Studio.
  2. Check the Audio Mixer at the bottom of the main window.
  3. If volume meters are inactive or capturing the wrong devices, go to Settings → Audio.
  4. Manually select the desired audio devices.

Step 4: Test Your Settings

Before diving into your first stream or recording, it’s essential to run a quick test to verify that all settings align with your preferences. Follow these steps:

  1. Double-check your settings in Settings → Output.
  2. On the Controls Dock, click Start Recording or Start Streaming.

We strongly recommend conducting a brief test to identify and address any issues proactively.

By following these five straightforward steps, you’ll be well-prepared to embark on your OBS Studio journey, ensuring a seamless and enjoyable streaming or recording experience.
