What is Bitrate and How do I adjust it in OBS

What is bitrate?

Bitrate is the amount of data that is transferred per second in a video stream. It is measured in kilobits per second (Kbps). The higher the bitrate, the better the video quality will be. However, a higher bitrate also requires more bandwidth.

To set your bitrate and resolution in OBS for Twitch Streaming

  1. Open OBS Studio.
  2. Click on the Settings button in the bottom right corner.
  3. Click on the Output tab.
  4. Under Output Mode, select Advanced.
  5. Under Video Bitrate, enter a bitrate that is appropriate for your upload speed. Twitch recommends a bitrate of 6000 Kbps for 1080p 60fps streaming, and 4500 Kbps for 1080p 30fps streaming. If you have a slower upload speed, you may need to reduce the bitrate to avoid buffering.
  6. Under Resolution, select the resolution that you want to stream at. Twitch recommends a resolution of 1920×1080 (1080p) for the best quality streaming experience. However, if you have a slower upload speed or a less powerful computer, you may need to reduce the resolution to 1280×720 (720p) or lower.
  7. Click OK to save your changes.

Once you have set your bitrate and resolution, you can start streaming to Twitch by clicking on the Start Streaming button in the bottom right corner of OBS Studio.

Here are some additional tips for setting your bitrate and resolution in OBS for Twitch Streaming:

  • If you are not sure what bitrate to use, start with a lower bitrate and increase it until you start to see buffering.
  • If you are experiencing buffering, try reducing your bitrate or resolution.
  • You can also use a bitrate calculator to help you determine the best bitrate for your upload speed and resolution.
  • If you have a powerful computer, you can try using a higher bitrate for better quality streaming.
  • Keep in mind that your viewers will need to have a fast enough internet connection to watch your stream at a higher resolution.

What to do if you are having streaming issues in OBS

If you are having streaming issues in OBS, such as buffering or dropped frames, try reducing your bitrate. You can also try reducing your resolution or lowering the FPS.

Here are some additional tips for troubleshooting streaming issues in OBS:

  • Make sure that your internet connection is fast enough to support the bitrate and resolution that you are streaming at.
  • Close any other programs that are using your internet connection.
  • Try restarting OBS and your computer.
  • Update your OBS and graphics card drivers.
  • Check the OBS forum or subreddit for help from other users.

If you are still having streaming issues, you may need to contact your internet service provider (ISP) for assistance.

Once you have found the best bitrate and resolution for your stream, you can start streaming to Twitch with confidence
